Tubes
My “Tubes” series was developed when I came into possession of a Barbie Knitting Machine, designed to help children create dresses for dolls, patterned around the central tube shape. Inspired by the artist LJ Roberts’ use of this hand-cranked knitting machine, I experimented in creating variations of tubes hung from rope in my studio to create an immersive installation.
I was interested in the tube as a structure and metaphor - a space with an inside, a tunnel, a container, phallic and yonic, physically supported by its hollow emptiness. Through this experimental process, I wrote and often edited an incomplete Tube Manifesto (or Manifestube), which you can read here.
